Neurons, Synapses & Neural Circuitry

To understand how learning takes place in the brain, it’s necessary to understand neurons, synapses, & neural circuitry

Through electrical & chemical activity, information flows throughout these structures in the nervous system

The Neuron

These are the excitable cells of the nervous system. There are many different types of neurons in the nervous system that perform similar functions for different purposes.

All of them contain a cell body, and axon, and dendrites

The Synapse

The synapse is the junction between neurons & this is where learning takes place. An electrical charge shoots down the axon that then releases chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the gap which then starts a new electrical reaction in the contacted dendrites

Neural Circuits

Billions of neurons within the brain are interconnected through synapses and organized in networks that encode & process all information in the central nervous system (brain & spinal cord).

These networks are molded by our environment and the skills we practice
